bouyant pelvis workshop
THE BUOYANT PELVIS - How to Maintain Muscular and Structural Integrity of the Pelvis in Yoga
with Angela Sullivan and Tammy Bigley, MSPT
Saturday, January 21
12:30 - 6:00 p.m.

A balanced yogic body begins with well executed movements performed with great ease and care. But what is “balanced”? Many yoga instructors are unaware of normal range and function of critical junctures of the body, most particularly the pelvis.

In the practice of yoga, every asana (posture) has its root in the pelvic girdle. Any misalignment of the pelvis creates an imbalance, and a repeated misalignment elevates the risk for injury.

The purpose of this workshop is to highlight what represents normal mechanics of the pelvis and its application to a yoga practice. How to truly practice ahimsa (non-harming) and injury proof your practice.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Understanding the basic biomechanics and anatomy of the pelvis and surrounding region.
  2. Recognizing the symptoms of sacroiliac joint dysfunction.
  3. Practical application of sound biomechanics in asana to prevent pelvic girdle injuries.

All Levels Welcome - Space is limited, please pre-register.

Shanti Shanti Photo

Shanti Shanti: is the musical expression of sisters, Andrea and Sara. They chant authentic Sanskrit and Latin in beautiful, celestial arrangements that are awe-inspiring. Their amazing voices, singer-songwriter style and their renowned Sanskrit chanting creates an otherworldly musical experience. They have worked with their father/producer, Robert Forman and with their brother Micah to create amazing harmonies for a powerful musical expression.

Andrea and Sara, at the age of 9 and 7, spontaneously were able to read, write, translate and chant the ancient language of Sanskrit. The phenomena eventually sparked the beginning of their music career.

Shanti Shanti has performed all of the United States, Canada and the U.K. They have been guests on Coast to Coast, The Tonight Show, appeared on numerous TV programs, radio shows and articles.

Myofacial Movement

Myofascial Movement and Meditation: Balancing the Front and Back Body with Katie Louvat, E-RYT, YACEP
Saturday, June 17, 1 - 4:00pm

Our bodies are wrapped in a vast and continuous matrix of connective tissue called fascia. In recent years, movement therapists have identified a number of myofascial pathways that run through our bodies, connecting specific groups of muscles, ligaments, and tendons and crossing multiple bones and joints. Repetitive movement, poor postural patterns, and past injury can lead to imbalance along these myofascial lines which can result in new injury, decreased range of motion in our joints, and chronic pain.

This workshop will focus on the connective tissue and muscles that run up the front and back of our bodies. Balancing these myofascial pathways can lead to increased freedom and health in the ankles, knees, and hips. It can reduce strain and compression in the lower back, free the breath, and dissolve tension that gathers in the neck and shoulders.

Through myofascial release (self-massage), meditative movement, and with support from a visual presentation, students will develop a clear felt-sense of their own unique fascial body. We'll learn ways to create both length and strength along these pathways so the body can move toward a more easeful, optimal and balanced alignment in both movement and stillness.

All levels are welcome.

Myofascial Movement and Meditation: Discovering the Deep Front Line with Katie Louvat, E-RYT, YACEP
Saturday, July 15, 1 - 4:00pm

Our bodies are wrapped in a vast and continuous matrix of connective tissue called fascia. In recent years, movement therapists have identified a number of myofascial pathways that run through our bodies, connecting specific groups of muscles, ligaments, and tendons and crossing multiple bones and joints. Repetitive movement, poor postural patterns, and past injury can lead to imbalance along these myofascial lines which can result in new injury, decreased range of motion in our joints, and chronic pain.

This workshop will focus on the Deep Front Line (DFL)—a deep continuity of muscles and connective tissue that make up our myofascial core. Running from the sole of our feet to the root of our tongue, the DFL provides core alignment and stability and makes it possible for us to move through the world with grace, stability, ease, and agility. Lack of proper balance and tone along the DFL can lead to foot, knee, hip, or back pain and a collapsed pelvic and/or spinal core.

Through myofascial release (self-massage), meditative movement, and with support from a visual presentation, we will develop a clear felt-sense of our own unique fascial bodies. We'll learn to lengthen and tone this deep myofascial pathway so we can move toward a more easeful, optimal and balanced alignment in both movement and stillness.

All levels of students are welcome.

Pitta Yoga

Pitta Yoga - Cooling asana practice for balancing fire + water
with Monica Limon, RYT500
5 Special Weekly Classes- Wednesdays 5:30-7:00 p.m.
class held at the studio next door to Yoga Loka suite #120
July 19 - August 1 6

Pacifying  Pitta
cooling / heart-opening / slow
Pacifying pitta during the hot summer season requires living in harmony with the inherent rhythms of Nature and observing patience and compassion with ourselves, others and environment. The best asanas for pitta are those that are slow and not overly heating. Cooling poses that help balance pitta are those that place pressure on the naval and solar plexus region, in the small intestine where pitta resides. We will explore asanas that directly affect the liver, spleen and small intestines to help regulate the strength of the digestive fire.

These classes explore practical Ayurvedic principles to integrate into your yoga practice to help restore your natural state of bliss and balance. No prior knowledge of Ayurveda is required, just a playful curiosity to experience the wisdom that is Ayurveda.

What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda, which means "knowledge of life," is an ancient Indian science of keeping the body and mind balanced and healthy. Health is achieved when you are aligned with your own natural and unique state of balance.

What is a dosha?
The three different doshas are known as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The three doshas are generally described in terms of the five elements: earth, air, fire, water, and ether (the subtle energy that connects all things). All three doshas constantly fluctuate according to our environment, which includes our diet, the seasons, the climate, our age, and many more factors.

Myofascial Movement and Meditation: Discovering the Spiral Line with Katie Louvat, E-RYT, YACEP
Saturday, August 26, 1 - 4:00 pm

Our bodies are wrapped in a vast and continuous matrix of connective tissue called fascia. In recent years, movement therapists have identified a number of myofascial pathways that run through our bodies, connecting specific groups of muscles, ligaments, and tendons and crossing multiple bones and joints. Repetitive movement, poor postural patterns, and past injury can lead to imbalance along these myofascial lines which can result in new injury, decreased range of motion in our joints, and chronic pain.

This workshop will focus on the Spiral Line (SPL)—a double helix-shaped pathway of muscle and fascia that links the body from head to toe and supports us with movements like walking, twisting, turning the head, and helps to maintain balance across all plains. When out of balance, the spiral line can create, compensate for, and maintain twists, rotations and lateral shifts in the body.

Through myofascial release (self-massage), meditative movement, and with support from a visual presentation, we will develop a clear felt-sense of our own unique fascial bodies and learn to move through the world with an increased sense of grace, ease, balance, and stability. Katie

According to Ayurveda, our physical bodies are composed of three different doshas known as Vata, Kapha, and Pitta. The three doshas are combinations of the five elements: earth, air, fire, water, and ether. All three doshas constantly change in response to our actions, thoughts, emotions, the foods we eat, the seasons, and any other sensory inputs that feed our mind and body.

When we live into the fulfillment of our individual natures (Prakruti), we naturally make lifestyle and dietary decisions that foster balance within our doshas. When we live against our intrinsic natures (Vikruti), we support unhealthy patterns that lead to physical and mental imbalances.

In this series we will explore the ancient healing system of Ayurveda to integrate into your yoga practice to restore balance for a healthy mind and body. No prior knowledge of Ayurveda is required, just a playful curiosity to experience the wisdom that is Yoga & Ayurveda.

"In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer." - Albert Camus

The winter solstice marks the beginning of winter and is the shortest day and the longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere. It celebrates the new Solar year and the return of the sun as every day now we will see more daylight. For time immemorial humans have taken refuge in the darkest, longest night. The time between this longest night and the New Year has traditionally been used to both quiet down and reflect as well as re-vision the awareness of one's self. Because ancient cultures were unaware of the changes in the Earth's position, they feared that the sunlight would never return. To bring it back, they engaged in many celebrations and ceremonies. In fact, there are more ceremonies and "rituals associated with the winter solstice than any other time of year."

This evening will include inspired readings with Taylor Donovan and several crystal bowl performance by Jennifer Shull Donovan.

Sun Salutations
with Jen Donovan, E-RYT, RCYT, RPYT

Winter Solstice Monday, December 18
5:30-7:00 p.m.

Celebrate the Solstice by challenging yourself to complete a Mala - 108 Sun Salutations.  108 is a very auspicious number in the yogic tradition.  The sun salutation is one of the most effective ways to learn about the vinyasa, binding the breath to the movement.   “The notion of a salutation to the sun is to pay your respects and surrender to the universe.  This can be taken as a metaphor to let go physically – the mind follows as you move ‘inside’ the practice.”

There will be a special crystal singing bowl savasana (relaxation) at the end.

Cost: One regular class price (drop in $18 or use a class from your pre-paid class package)
